My keys to success are being genuine around people and making people feel welcome and happy.
What I’ve always wanted to be is a dog’s dog. I love having canine friends with whom I can hang, chase and care for.
My best day is when I get a good chest rub, a Greenie, a squirrel chase, and a grilled ham and cheese sandwich cut into fours.
Though he considers himself simply a small person with fur, Bruiser has been a dog since 2010. He is a ‘mixed-heritage’ rescue dog originally from Mississippi. Abandoned as a young pup, Bruiser found himself in a short-term/high-kill shelter in southern Mississippi. He was transported from there to a school of veterinarian medicine for ‘practice’ purposes.
Fortunately for Bruiser, the students at the vet school had started a rescue program, “Homeward Bound.” Once they got a practice dog they saved a practice dog.
Although needing hip surgery for a problem left hip, Bruiser was advertised for adoption. George and Steph came across him by accident in an email solicitation from Homeward Bound. Looking rather goofy in his photos, they didn’t think anyone else would adopt this odd looking creature who needed hip surgery and rehab. No relocation shelter would take him because of his hip even with surgery being planned.
Bruiser was successfully treated by a surgeon at the school, but arrived in New Hampshire able to use only three legs at the time. He came with a host of other medical problems. Always in great spirits, Bruiser rehabbed by chasing squirrels and chippies up and down the mountains in New Hampshire and is fully recovered today.
Bruiser plays “chase” in the North End, enjoys long strolls around the Waterfront and basic American cuisine. In his spare time he practices his ‘squirrel stalking’ skills and hopes one day to actually catch a squirrel, though it is highly unlikely.
As he matured and all his ailments were cured, Bruiser turned out to be quite handsome and is considering modeling as a second career. Women seem to adore him and George is quite jealous, though he likes to take genetic credit for Bruiser’s good looks.
